I’m so proud to be a teacher here at Strasburg Elementary School.  This will be my sixth year here and I can't imagine working at any other place as this is my home away from home!  I am ecstatic to be teaching first grade as I enjoy developing a love of reading, writing, and math.

I am originally from the state of Texas and moved to Colorado in 1986.  After so many years living in Colorado it still doesn’t take many spoken words for others to realize the remnants of my southern accent.  My extended family tells me that I have lost my accent but Coloradoans say otherwise.  I am happily married to my husband, Tom Kopriva.  We have three grown boys, Jonathan, Michael, and Greg.  We are proud to announce that we are going to be grandparents this year.  Michael and Nicole are having a baby boy in August. Jon and Greg live here in Colorado; while Mike and his wife lives in Arizona.  We have two lovely golden retriever girls that bring a joy to our lives.  I personally enjoy reading, gardening, hiking in the mountains, sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

My desire to become a teacher started in first grade when I first met Mrs. Rhodes.   I wanted to be just like her because she made me feel so special and took the time make sure that I succeeded in her class.   After my boys completed their elementary school years in 2004, I started teaching in 2005.  Currently, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Linguistic Diverse Students in second language learning, and an endorsement in Special Education.  My favorite subjects to teach are reading, math, and second language learning.

I believe that all students can and will rise to my high expectations.  When expectations are clearly explained, students are able to rise to that level.  I believe in choice.  We each have a choice in how we behave, in how we spend our time, and in our attitude.  As a teacher, I will frequently remind my students about the many choices they make each day, and will encourage them to make good choices in their learning.  I hope to build true relationships with my students, to touch their lives in a positive way, and to create in them a lifelong love of learning.
